Volkswagen is reportedly working on a boosted Clubsport variant of the new ID Polo GTI. An electric hot hatch aiming to recreate the experience of historic GTIs, but characterized by logics and ingredients typical of the EV world. The proposal, according to what was also reported by Autocar last year when the car was still referred to as ID 2, stems from the idea of making the combination of engine and performance management even more “driving-oriented”, exploiting both power margins and systems capable of giving the driver sensations similar to those of an internal combustion car.

A Volkswagen ID Polo GTI Clubsport?
Meanwhile, in a phase now close to production, the German manufacturer continues to refine the dynamics and software details to make the action in acceleration and simulated gear changes more engaging. According to internal sources, the power of the future Clubsport would rise to over 280 HP, a significant jump that would also be supported by interventions on the drivetrain. Among the key novelties would be the adoption of a fully mechanical limited-slip differential instead of the current active BorgWarner unit, aiming to improve torque management on the front axle.
Obvious potential
In this regard, dynamics manager Florian Umbach said: “We are working on it. There is definitely a greater maximum power potential that we can get from the motor and battery we have available, as well as greater torque that the front axle could handle. The potential is obvious. We are also developing a power delivery system similar to that of the electric Hyundai N models with paddle shifters. It’s simply a matter of software. It concerns motor control and a suitable soundtrack. But all this will depend on the board of directors, who will allow us to explore only if the GTI has commercial success, of course. If the public appreciates this car as it is, we can really take it to the next level.”
