By the end of 2030 Volvo will launch 13 new cars in what it calls the broadest and most ambitious range expansion in its history. This was announced by the Swedish company itself: not all details are known yet, but we know that among the new models there will be sedans and station wagons, and that the new vehicles will be a mix of electric and hybrid models that will ensure the company a diversified portfolio on a regional basis, with distinct offerings for Western markets and for China.
Volvo’s major offensive
According to Autocar, Volvo’s decision to regionalize the offering is driven by technological limitations, trade tariffs, and divergent customer preferences, with the goal of turning regionalization into a competitive advantage. Going into more detail, the Swedish company plans to launch seven new models in Western markets, based on the existing SPA2 and SPA3 architectures and equipped with the HuginCore computing platform. The range will be divided between vehicles intended for the American market, including a segment D electric SUV, and models for Europe. In the long term, Volvo does not change its mind: in the Old Continent it aims to offer a fully electric range by the end of the decade, including new body types both low and high profile.
Europe is not China
At the same time, six new models will be introduced specifically for China. They will all be developed in collaboration with the parent company Geely, and will use shared platforms along with a technological infrastructure dedicated to the Chinese market. “This is our strongest product range ever, designed to meet the needs of different markets and aimed at realizing our ambition to become the leading brand in the premium segment,” said Hakan Samuelsson, Volvo’s CEO.
