MotoGP Austria, the Sprint report

It is September 19, but for Jorge Martin it is an early Christmas: the Spaniard wins the Red Bull Ring Sprint after a shocking gift from Pedro Acosta, who after dominating crashes at the best moment. The Aprilia rider is faber fortunae suae, because he goes to seek good fortune with a magnificent Sprint: the only slip comes in turn 1 and allows Marc Marquez to slip through the chicane very aggressively, pushing Martin wide and forcing him to a comeback from seventh position.

Martinator, however, has an excellent pace and makes the difference under braking like two years ago: he passes Bagnaia, Alex Marquez, Ogura, Bezzecchi and also Marc Marquez in a row, overtaken in turn 1 with equal aggression. Acosta, however, is unreachable. Three laps from the end, at the turn 2 chicane, the unexpected happens: the Tiburón goes into the gravel and throws away 12 sure points. Martin takes the package under the tree, unwraps it and finds a +3 in the World Championship over Marc Marquez.

Incredible twist starring Acosta. There are two hypotheses: a distraction error or a brake failure. If it were the first case, it would be a serious naivety but at the same time often explainable by #37’s unfamiliarity with competing at the front, at least in MotoGP.

Beyond Acosta’s mistake, Martin is unstoppable, even for a Marquez who, although starting as the favorite of the weekend, shows to be the “third force” alongside Marco Bezzecchi. The Rimini rider is good at limiting the damage in a weekend that so far has never seen him as a protagonist, even if the gap from the lead is now -38.
