Safety Commission Mugello, 12 riders present out of 22: all agree on the 3 starts in Barcelona

Friday at 6 PM, MotoGP Safety Commission

After the Barcelona accidents that kept the entire MotoGP paddock on edge for long minutes, several riders admitted to having underestimated the importance of attending the Safety Commission meetings, assuring that they would participate at Mugello.
And at the late afternoon meeting on Friday of the Italian Grand Prix, there were not only the usual three riders (Pecco Bagnaia, Luca Marini, and Jack Miller), but the number of participants rose to 12.
It was an opportunity for Carlos Ezpeleta – MotoGP sporting director – to present to the riders the four points to work on regarding safety, discussed with the 11 teams just the day before.

How did the meeting go?

In a meeting with the Italian press, including FormulaPassion.it, Carlos Ezpeleta explained: “We are not worried about safety. The two accidents that happened in Barcelona are part of this sport, but they could have happened on any circuit. We had very positive meetings with the 11 teams on Thursday and with the 12 riders on Friday at the Safety Commission and I believe this is positive news.”

They then discussed the four areas of improvement, starting with the starting grid with more spaced rows, then the possibility of banning the lowering devices starting from 2026, protection for the rear wheel, and finally a rear light system for any sudden technical problems that can promptly warn the chasing riders.
Ezpeleta assured: “I think it is important to say that both all the teams and all the riders agreed with the decisions made in Barcelona. They told us they agreed to continue the race. So the criticism about the third start vanished: “For the first time in almost 30 years, there were 3 starts. Many things were said in the heat of the moment, but the same riders yesterday said that thinking about it calmly they agreed. There was no reason not to resume, there were no safety issues.”
