Within a few years Renault will further renew the Clio. But this time it will do so with a new generation: 2035 (or shortly before) is mentioned as a possible deadline by which we will see the debut of the new version of the French compact car. “We believe that in Europe there is a sort of sub-segment not yet covered, namely that of compact rear-wheel-drive sedans, where we need to invent the successor to the Clio. And this is what we are working on now“, explained Renault CEO Fabrice Cambolive.

New generation Renault Clio
In an interview with Autocar, the head of the Diamond brand revealed that “we are trying to understand the potential of compact sedans and what their ideal size could be”. According to him, today a compact sedan should be 4.1-4.2 meters long. “How can this segment be covered when it is not an SUV but a compact sedan? And what kind of car should we aim for? Should it be sportier, practical, versatile, and so on? This is what we are trying to anticipate with the Clio for the next generation”, he added.
No retro inspiration
One thing seems certain: the next generation Clio should not be retro. “We are talking about a clever car, we have to think of it this way, without trying to fit it into a fully electrified world. But it is still too early to answer. I don’t know if at this stage we will have an internal combustion engine”, he commented. We know that the new generation platform the French company is developing can accommodate both fully electric powertrains and range extenders. “What we are saying is that by 2030 we want to be 100% electrified, with 50% BEV vehicles. Now the trend towards pure electric is even stronger than we had anticipated. And this means it is still too early to answer, but frankly, when the next Clio arrives we will be in a fully electrified world”, Cambolive concluded.
