Over the next year Lexus may start production of a new electric model. In autumn, to be precise. This is reported by Carscoops citing Nikkei Asia: according to rumors, the Japanese company will produce a next-generation electric vehicle in a new plant in Shanghai. At the moment little is known about the model: it seems to be a crossover made with cutting-edge technologies, including Giga-Casting to fuse together multiple aluminum body components into a single large piece.

New Lexus electric crossover
Not an absolute novelty in the automotive production world. This solution was in fact first adopted by Tesla, and over the months it is gradually spreading more and more in the automotive industry. For example, we know it will be used on the upcoming Ford Fathom and promises a significant weight reduction. In the case of the Lexus electric vehicle, this could increase the crossover’s range by several percentage points, according to estimates.
Giga-Casting technology
The production launch of this new model will happen in steps. Lexus indeed plans to produce about 1,000 units per month in the first year of its new electric crossover. However, production should later increase to reach tens of thousands of units per year. From what leaks out, the model seems to be exclusive to the Chinese market, which would represent a change for the Japanese company. A look at the current Lexus lineup actually reveals a series of family models, including NX, RX, GX, and LX, along with ES, LS, LM, and RZ. The latter is the brand’s only electric vehicle in a market that practically demands it.
