F1 Spa, the report of Free Practice 1

The Spa weekend starts with a surprise: Mercedes is not there. Or rather, it is but not visible. On the track that should have once again confirmed the W17’s engine superiority, Kimi Antonelli finishes sixth, over half a second behind the morning leader Max Verstappen. Perhaps the fault lies with a setup that is too light, which pays dividends up to Les Combes; in the second sector Antonelli and George Russell struggle greatly and lose all their advantage. Then Super Max shines (1:47.070), a three-time winner here who, with the home advantage, wants to return to victory, also dispelling the controversies around his future.

The Ferraris chase Verstappen by one and a half tenths with Lewis Hamilton and by two tenths with Charles Leclerc. The SF-26 delivers the best responses in corners (the Monegasque has the best T2) but certainly the gap on the straight has not been erased, as seen at the end of the Kemmel straight. Both the Reds and the RB22s have shown decent signs in race pace, but for more meaningful simulations we will have to wait for the other sessions, when there will be greater convergence on setups and energy management. However, the weather situation must be monitored, as it has just started raining on the circuit, and this is a factor that could affect the afternoon’s work.

In the top 5 is Oscar Piastri, who precedes Antonelli (once again much faster than Russell) and teammate Lando Norris. Racing Bulls start again as the fifth force (Arvid Lindblad ninth ahead of Gabriel Bortoleto and Liam Lawson), while Haas and Alpine disappoint again. It is not even possible to talk about disappointment for Aston Martin, last by 2″ from Williams and 2.5″ from Cadillac: Lawrence Stroll’s team hopes this is the last weekend of suffering before the arrival of the B version in Hungary.
