ACO and FIA in the trenches over Balance of Performance
The organizers of the WEC World Championship – ACO and FIA – have announced that from this season, Balance of Performance tables will no longer be public domain. “People who believe it’s all fake and a scam will never change“, said ACO competition director Bruno Famin on the eve of the Imola 6 Hours, which saw Toyota win on its debut with the TR010 Hybrid Hypercar ahead of the Ferrari 499P, which won the last three editions of the 24 Hours of Le Mans and all titles up for grabs in 2025.

Famin emphasized that trying to explain what a ‘Rolling BOP’ is too complicated, and therefore the organizers preferred to take the path of silence: “We choose a certain number of representative races – said Famin, as reported by Endurance24 – there is a rather enormous amount of data processing work to retain a certain number of laps that are as representative of performance as possible. We do a cleanup to have the most representative database possible. Then we eliminate races that are not representative and take the best ones. We have selected a ‘sample’ of races that are not necessarily the same for every manufacturer. That’s why we don’t say what they are, nor how many there are.”
Naturally, at the end of the Imola 6 Hours, Ferrari and Toyota declared that the best car on track was not theirs, but rather that of their opponents. In three weeks at Spa, a more representative picture of the forces at play will emerge after the debut in the ‘Monaco of WEC’, then it will already be time to think about the 24 Hours of Le Mans without having the parameters set for the Balance of Performance available.
