Miami’s ‘new beginning’
The much-talked-about adjustments to F1’s technical regulations, which we will start to see in action from the Miami weekend, seem to have the blessing of the drivers. The president of the GPDA, former Austrian driver Alex Wurz, had recently defined the innovations born from meetings between FIA, F1, and teams as “a step in the right direction“, even if not yet definitive, and had wanted to highlight the great work done by the drivers during discussions with the federation.
Now Alex Albon, Williams driver, interviewed in a recent episode of the podcast Up To Speed has confirmed the same opinion, giving credit to the FIA for having finally taken the drivers’ opinion into great consideration and for having made what – according to the Thai driver – were significant steps forward.
Constructive dialogue
“I really like the fact that the FIA involves us in these discussions – Albon stated – and I wouldn’t say that it has always been like this in the past, perhaps because it wasn’t necessary. But for the most part, we give advice, we tell them what we think might or might not be in line with the spirit of the discipline, and they take it into account. Of course, they explain the bigger picture of this sport to us, and we understand it, so I think that the more they involve us, the more we drivers can avoid getting angry“.

A dialogue based on mutual interest that seems to have brought welcome results to the drivers: “We have been consulted, we like to be involved because I think it’s an opportunity for us to have our say. For example, the regulation changes that have been made in Miami largely stem from conversations with the drivers and other similar things, so we are positive about the changes made – Albon commented – we are happy. It’s going in the right direction. It’s probably not a definitive solution, but it’s going in the correct direction“.
