Excise cut, halved discount on diesel

Excise cut, halved discount on diesel

From today, a full tank of diesel will cost 3 euros more, while average fuel prices continue to fluctuate around the 2 euro per liter mark. This was reported by today’s edition of La Stampa. This measure, resulting from new choices in available resources, confirms the government’s approach. On the one hand, the excise duty cut on petrol of 5 cents is maintained, but on the other hand, the discount applied to diesel is reduced with an immediate effect on the final cost for motorists. The maneuver stems from a new decree: according to estimates, it entails an increase in spending of approximately 17 million euros per week for consumers.

New decree: diesel news

In detail, based on the provision published yesterday in the Official Gazette, the cut on diesel is further halved. Until yesterday, the discount was 10 cents; with the new intervention, it drops to 5 cents. Considering VAT, the difference translates to 12.2 cents (before) versus 6.1 cents (now), respectively. The alignment of the diesel discount with that of premium petrol, in fact, also paves the way for the hypothesis of a future zeroing of concessions. The hope is that, in the meantime, international fuel prices will continue to follow the downward trend already observed in recent days.

Discounts until July 3

The new diesel discount starts today, June 7, and will remain in effect until July 3, 2026, thus for another 27 days. This is the period when consumption tends to increase due to the approaching holidays. To cover the lower revenues, the Ministry of Economy indicates, as expected, the identification of 149.4 million euros in increased VAT revenue achieved in May. Overall, the resources employed by the government to stabilize fuel prices amount to approximately 1.8 billion euros.
