Audi unveiled a new supercar in recent days: the Nuvolari. And in some ways, it appeared as if out of nowhere. Presented as the spiritual heir to the R8, the car aims for an even more marked idea of exclusivity. Deliveries, according to the information released, would start next year. Initial production would be set at just 499 units, but the announcement immediately comes with an important “asterisk”. Audi CEO, Gernot Dollner, hinted at the possibility of a roadster variant, fueling the fascination and curiosity for what might come after the coupé.

Will the Audi Nuvolari also be a roadster?
The dialogues reported by Top Gear confirmed that the 499 Nuvolari units are not the last word. When asked if, in addition to the coupé, another 499 Nuvolari Spyder units would be produced, Dollner reportedly replied “no”, only to clarify the picture even better with a second remark: “Not 499”. A message that, rather than closing the discussion, moves it forward: if an even rarer version arrives after the coupé, it is plausible to imagine a roof designed to offer an even more “open-air” experience to the driver. Yet, the technical enigma remains as to how Audi will manage to reconcile driving sensations and engineering constraints.
Discussion only postponed
The crux of the matter, in fact, concerns the roof. The R8 Spyder used a fabric soft top, while a Concept C showed more complex solutions with a retractable hardtop: different choices, with different impacts on weight and architecture. The Nuvolari also features a minimalist carbon fiber body and a performance-oriented plug-in hybrid powertrain. The all-wheel drive thus manages to achieve a combined power of approximately 1,000 hp, numbers that allow for 0-100 km/h in 2.6 seconds and a top speed over 350 km/h, at least under certain operating conditions. The rest – especially the configuration of the possible roadster – will depend on how Audi decides to translate the “roofless” idea into mechanics.
