Autonomous driving could become an increasingly concrete reality in Italian cities thanks to new steps on the experimentation front in real contexts. In this scenario, Niulinx, an Italian startup spin-off of the Politecnico di Milano, has obtained authorization from the Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport to start tests of autonomous vehicles on public roads. A green light that allows the company to transfer its technology from the simulated world and controlled tests to that of daily traffic, a fundamental condition for verifying reliability, performance, and management of unforeseen situations.

Autonomous Driving Tests in Lombardy
The tests will take place in Lombardy, in the urban areas of the municipalities of Cernusco sul Naviglio (approximately 279 km of infrastructure) and Brescia (over 635 km). The technological platform is a Fiat 500e, equipped with an advanced architecture of redundant sensors and actuators, as well as high-performance computing units. To increase the trust of citizens and road users, the company emphasizes that the experimentation does not start “from scratch,” but is preceded by extensive validation in simulated environments and on closed tracks. And, once launched on the road, it will follow very rigorous operating rules, with continuous monitoring and procedures designed to minimize risks.
The Niulinx startup takes center stage
In particular, the presence of constant supervision prevents the vehicle from operating in total isolation. On board there will be a safety driver, while remotely a team of certified operators will be able to intervene promptly on the controls. Operating limits are also carefully defined: they include reduced speed and circumscribed perimeters, with a maximum speed limited to 30 km/h. Furthermore, in case of unmanageable situations or anomalies, the vehicle is designed to stop autonomously and immediately, without depending on the driver’s action.
