Volkswagen has recently announced the start of mass production of its first model jointly developed with the Chinese electric vehicle manufacturer Xpeng. We are talking about the ID. UNYX 08. It is a large electric SUV that is part of the group’s broader offensive in the alternative energy vehicle segment in China, where over 20 new models are planned for this year alone.

Volkswagen and Xpeng: there is news
The crossover will be on sale in the first half of the year and represents one of the pillars of Volkswagen’s “in China, for China” strategy, aimed at regaining ground in a rapidly transforming market increasingly dominated by local competitors like BYD and Geely. The ID. UNYX 08 is also a significant example of the group’s new production and technological philosophy. Developed in collaboration with Xpeng, it features autonomous driving systems and AI Turing chips provided by the Chinese partner, and took just 24 months from conception to series production.
First ID model in production
Volkswagen emphasized that the new local architecture allows for vehicles to be built about 30% faster, a crucial advantage for competing in China where launch speed and software integration are determining factors for commercial success. And it doesn’t end there: Reuters reports that a second model born from the partnership with Xpeng is scheduled for the end of the year, thus strengthening the technological collaboration between the two companies.

New EV already scheduled
The launch comes at a delicate time for the German manufacturer, which after losing its sales leadership in China in 2024, overtaken by Geely and ousted by BYD, is seeking a relaunch in its most important market. Volkswagen aims to introduce up to 50 new electric vehicles to the Chinese market by 2030, relying on a broad mix of BEVs and PHEVs between 2026 and the following years. Production of the ID. UNYX 08 and the future second model will take place at the Hefei plant, west of Shanghai, with an annual capacity of 350.000 units. For the record, this is the same plant that also supplies the Cupra Tavascan SUV destined for export to Europe.
