Toyota Motor Europe in collaboration with BMW Group, Bosch and Repsol has announced the launch of a six-month pilot project in Spain starting from July. The initiative aims to demonstrate the real potential of vehicles running exclusively on biofuels. The goal is to verify their effectiveness in real operational conditions with a technologically neutral approach. The experiment is born with the objective of accelerating the transition towards the decarbonization of mobility in Europe.
Toyota experiments with biofuels
The project will be carried out on a fleet composed of about twenty Toyota and BMW powered by Repsol synthetic gasoline (Nexa 95). The vehicles will be supported by Bosch’s digital fuel tracking technology. In particular, the activity intends to provide concrete evidence that vehicles powered only by biofuels can be effectively used on a large scale. Leveraging fuel availability, certification technologies, and integration capacity with existing infrastructures. The fleet distribution therefore represents the testing ground to show how already existing models can operate today with 100% renewable fuels, reducing the need for new infrastructure investments.
One project, three objectives
The key objectives of the pilot are multiple. On one hand, they concern the availability of synthetic gasoline on the market using Repsol’s network, currently the only supplier of 100% renewable gasoline at public stations in Spain. On the other hand, the availability of tracking and digital certification technologies enabled by Bosch’s “Digital Fuel Twin” system, which certifies the use of renewable fuels throughout the entire life cycle. There is also a third pillar, which is the demonstration of the distribution of the fleet vehicles in operation, with solid and transparent monitoring.

BMW, Repsol and Bosch are also involved
In this perspective, the Bosch system will collect and validate data related to refueling from multiple sources, including all vehicle data, service stations, and fuel card transactions. Repsol’s renewable Nexa 95 gasoline is produced from raw materials compliant with the RED (Renewable Energy Directive), offering significant reductions in greenhouse gas emissions compared to fossil fuels while remaining compatible with gasoline engines and current infrastructures. Spain was chosen for the combination of fuel availability, partner collaboration, and operational support from Toyota Spain.
