Mazda CX-6e, agility rhymes with stability

Step by step, Mazda has also entered the electric segment of the market. Today, the Japanese manufacturer’s zero-emission range expands with the new CX-6e, a mid-size electric SUV that we tested on the streets of Düsseldorf and surroundings. An extremely agile and efficient vehicle, combining the iconic Kodo design, spacious interiors, and advanced connectivity technologies. The result is a crossover as quiet as it is effective on the road.

Mazda CX-6e is immediately recognizable

Regarding the design, the front of the CX-6e features Mazda’s wing-shaped signature, whose sequential lighting during opening, closing, and charging phases creates a strong three-dimensional visual effect. The vehicle’s lines are bold and clean, integrating aerodynamic air intakes that make the airflow visible through the grille and along the sculpted hood. Elsewhere, we find shark-fin digital mirrors and air intakes integrated into the D-pillars. Finally, the overview is completed by the powerful belt lines, pronounced wheel arches, sculpted sides, and slim rear light clusters.

Technological and connected interiors

While the vehicle is immediately recognizable externally, inside the cabin we find a series of advanced technologies, materialized in a 26″ ultrawide touchscreen, a Head-Up display, voice recognition, and gesture control. Of course, safety also plays a fundamental role. In this regard, Mazda has designed a complete suite of advanced driver assistance systems, including Smart Brake Support, Cruising & Traffic Support, and Emergency Lane Keeping. From a connectivity and onboard experience perspective, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, connected services, and a 23-speaker audio system are also included.

Engine and battery

Regarding the engine, the new Mazda CX-6e is available in a single configuration. The lithium-iron-phosphate battery has a capacity of 78 kWh, powering a 190 kW (258 hp) rear electric motor, thus ensuring ready and responsive performance. In terms of range, in the WLTP cycle the Japanese manufacturer’s SUV guarantees up to 484 km on a single charge. Speaking of charging: the maximum DC power of 200 kW allows going from 10 to 80% in about 24 minutes, while the 11 kW onboard charger makes AC charging practical.

Spaciousness and a mention of the wheels

Chapter spaciousness. The long 2,902 mm wheelbase and short overhangs of the CX-6e enhance versatile loading capabilities. In particular, the trunk boasts a volume of 468 liters, extendable up to 1,434 by folding down the second-row seats, and offers a low loading threshold with regular opening. Added to this is an 80-liter front compartment, designed to store charging cables. Special mention also for the wheels: the 19″ aerodynamic 5-spoke design wheels come standard on the Takumi trim, while the 21″ 5-double-spoke design wheels are optional for the Takumi and standard for the Takumi Plus.

Mazda CX-6e on the road

On the road, the new Mazda CX-6e offers all the responses expected from an SUV of this type. The throttle response is always ready, and the acceleration itself is extremely smooth and fluid. In terms of pure performance, the Japanese manufacturer declares a 0 to 100 km/h sprint in 7.9 seconds and a top speed of 185 km/h. The crossover tackles every road roughness with great precision, thanks to the springs and shock absorbers of the front MacPherson and rear multi-link suspensions that have been carefully recalibrated. In this sense, the electric rack steering assistance positively intervenes: the result is a vehicle agile at low speeds and stable at higher ones.

Dimensions and prices

Acceleration yes, but also braking. Mazda has worked on the brake pedal sensitivity, and has done so with excellent results, since the latter guarantees a constant response when switching from regenerative to mechanical braking. As mentioned, agility is one of the strengths of this electric SUV. And it is not obvious in light of its dimensions: over 4.8 meters long, almost 2 meters wide, and more than 1.6 meters high. The vehicle is already orderable, with prices starting from 46,750 euros for the Takumi version and 49,750 euros for the Takumi Plus.
