Ferrari in the crosshairs
Fernando Alonso was the protagonist in a press conference in Madrid, on the eve of the first Spanish GP held on the Madring circuit, which is located right in the Iberian capital. The two-time world champion – who together with Carlos Sainz is one of the two home drivers – as always gave comments anything but trivial, starting with the assessment of the layout of this new track: “We are happy to be here, to return to Madrid after many years. It is a new track and a new challenge for everyone, especially considering the complexity of the cars with the new regulations. For me it is definitely something special. The circuit? I tackled it on the simulator, but it would be better to ask the Ferrari drivers who have driven here during a filming day…“. It is not the first time Alonso has teased Maranello on this issue.

The Aston Martin driver then actually gave a few more assessments regarding the Madrid track, agreeing with what was suggested by his compatriot Carlos Sainz who had judged the new city track as “particularly difficult“: “It is not an easy track – Alonso said during the press conference – the grip of the asphalt is an unknown. There will be an evolution in terms of speed and we will also have to work on the setup. But we can’t wait. We have to do as many laps as possible to get familiar“.

Uncertain future
Finally, Alonso had fun keeping the journalists present in suspense about his future: “What will I do in 2027? You won’t hear news soon. Why? Because it’s nice this way – he added smiling – the issue is to understand what the rules will be next year and what kind of impact they will have, if any, on racing and on the drivers’ work. I believe that the current cars, as I have said many times, are not the best to drive for fun. Next year should represent a step in the right direction – Alonso continued – but I also have to think about the problems to face next year. I will have to sit down with the team and we will see if I will be behind the wheel or somewhere else. So we will understand where I can help them the most: this is the most important thing to evaluate together“.
