Hyundai will launch the first vehicles equipped with its proprietary driving assistance software at the end of 2029, with a delay of two years compared to the initial plans. In the meantime, to accelerate technological implementation, the South Korean car manufacturer will rely on collaboration with Nvidia. The decision to reschedule the roadmap highlights the difficulties in the internal development of the software needed to achieve increasingly advanced driving assistance systems, a project originally expected to debut at the end of 2027. And which now risks compressing the competitiveness window compared to global rivals, including Tesla and Chinese players.

Hyundai focuses on assisted driving
Hyundai’s strategy, Reuters reports, is based on a closer relationship with Nvidia also on the ADAS systems front. According to a company executive, the collaboration will allow the introduction in 2028 of advanced driving assistance features, indicated as Level 2+ and Level 2++. Park Min-woo, Hyundai’s president, emphasized that the partnership with Nvidia does not mean “completely delegating” its future, but co-designing the technology and using the data generated by the systems to train and refine its software platform, called Atria. Park, a former Nvidia executive who joined Hyundai in January, appears as a promoter of strengthening the relationship with the chip manufacturer.
Project delayed by two years
On the technical side, Hyundai vehicles based on the Nvidia Hyperion 10 platform will start without expensive lidar sensors, instead relying on a set of more “classic” technologies such as cameras, ultrasonic sensors, and radar. However, the group is considering the use of lidar for its Level 3 autonomous driving systems, which allow driving without holding the steering wheel under specific conditions. In this regard, Park highlighted the importance of sensor redundancy to ensure safety in case of failures, although without indicating timing for the commercialization of Level 3.
