MotoGP Mugello, the GP report

Marco Bezzecchi dreams and makes others dream. After securing his first pole at the Italian GP, the Romagna rider drives Mugello crazy by achieving his first victory at the Scarperia circuit. For Aprilia, it is a triumphant day, with the official team’s one-two and Ai Ogura’s fourth place: the Noale manufacturer breaks the Mugello taboo in the top class, having never before gone beyond third place with Jeremy McWilliams in 2000 and Aleix Espargaró in 2022.

Bezzecchi, loudly cheered by the crowd, cannot hold back tears after the checkered flag. In parc fermé, Kimi Antonelli is also waiting for him, for an Italy that is dominating every motorsport ranking.

Jorge Martin has no chance of getting close to a Bezzecchi who only made a mistake at turn 1 of the Sprint this weekend. The Spaniard is still good at minimizing the damage with second place behind his teammate: in the riders’ World Championship standings, he is at -17. A very important podium also for Francesco Bagnaia, who took the lead at the start of the race thanks to a great start: he held it until lap 14, when Bezzecchi – worried by Martin’s return – broke free and flew towards his fourth win of the season. “Pecco” has much less than Aprilia and in the last lap gives everything to defend the podium from Ai Ogura‘s claws, who made the usual great comeback from 13th position: at Bucine he even tries to play a trick on Bagnaia, but goes wide and the Ducati rider crosses successfully.

Fifth place for Fabio Di Giannantonio, who with a better start could have had a say for the podium; Raul Fernandez (8th) also regrets his mistake at turn 1 condemning himself to a comeback GP, while an indomitable Marc Marquez has to settle for P7. In the twisty sections, the physical difficulty of the world champion is noticeable, just returned from double surgery on foot and shoulder. With a 102-point deficit and such a strong Aprilia, it will be difficult even for someone like him to get the championship back on track, but #93 deserves only applause for the dedication and mentality shown on a track that demands a lot physically.
