F1 Spa, the Free Practice 3 report
The approach to the Spa Qualifying is made of confirmations and unknowns. The confirmation is always him: Kimi Antonelli. The Bolognese is once again the fastest (1:45.990) ahead of Lando Norris and Max Verstappen thanks to his innate ability to find the time on the first try without particular adjustments. George Russell, on the other hand, needs it, as he gets closer compared to FP2 (when the gap was 1.2 seconds) but remains three tenths behind his teammate.
The unknowns are several: they concern Russell himself (who could find the right setup at the last minute as in Barcelona and at the Red Bull Ring) and especially Lewis Hamilton. The seven-time world champion indeed crashes exiting Fagnes: an accident that, in dynamics and position, is identical to Pierre Gasly‘s in FP2, with the Ferrari driver losing the rear and hitting violently with the right rear. The #44 hopes there are no more serious implications, which would involve the gearbox: in any case, the mechanics will be forced to extra work to allow him to participate in the 16:00 Qualifying.

While Norris and Verstappen remain within about a tenth and a half gap and can therefore aim for a good qualifying (but the world champion will receive a ten-place grid penalty), Charles Leclerc is struggling. The Monegasque is sixth with a delay of over seven tenths from Antonelli and four tenths from Hamilton: “I need a tow, let’s prepare for qualifying,” he says at the end of FP3. A SOS sent to the pit wall ahead of Q3: the Silverstone triumph already seems very far away.

Oscar Piastri and Isack Hadjar are also struggling (seventh and tenth respectively), between them the two Audi of Nico Hülkenberg and Gabriel Bortoleto. Mattia Binotto’s team beats Racing Bulls, still favored for the role of fifth force. At the back, well-defined roles, with Haas as the fourth-last force ahead of Williams, Cadillac, and Aston Martin.
