At the end of an online meeting, FIA, FOM, teams, and engine manufacturers reached an agreement to modify the power units next year. In 2027, the power of the thermal engine will increase while the electric part will be reduced, aiming to solve the problems encountered so far. The Federation, however, announced the arrival of other regulation changes for the upcoming races, mainly concerning safety at the start and in wet conditions.

The changes for 2027
The parties involved have reached an agreement to intervene on the power unit hardware next year. The plan includes an increase in fuel flow, which according to estimates will ensure an increase in the thermal engine power of 50 kW, for a total updated output of about 600 horsepower. At the same time, it was decided to limit the performance of the electric part, reducing its maximum power by 50 kW. By doing so, the current 50:50 ratio between thermal and electric will be abandoned, moving closer to 60:40. The Federation has already scheduled new meetings to define the changes in detail. It is likely that aspects external to the power unit will also need to be reviewed, since the increase in fuel flow will lead to higher fuel consumption, requiring larger tanks.
Initially, it seemed unrealistic that an agreement could be found already for next year, with the various teams and engine manufacturers each having their own personal interests, but the FIA speaks of a “unanimous commitment” from all parties involved. “The final proposals presented at today’s meeting are the result of a series of consultations over the past weeks between the FIA and the various stakeholders, with valuable input provided by the drivers. The next step will be to formally present these regulatory changes for an electronic vote by the World Motorsport Council once the engine manufacturers have voted on this package.”

Medium-term interventions
During the same meeting, the regulation changes introduced in Miami were also analyzed, noting a general improvement in the situation, with no safety concerns. However, further assessments will continue to be made for additional corrections at upcoming events. These will mainly concern safety, particularly emergency procedures at the start and wet race scenarios, while changes to the signaling lights could already be made in Canada.
