Opel, new C-SUV made in Europe within two years

Opel has announced a crucial project within its model strategy. It involves the development of a new compact SUV, fully electric, designed for the C-segment and aimed at becoming a key player in a highly competitive market. The vehicle would serve to significantly expand the current SUV range of the Blitz brand, currently composed of the Grandland, Frontera, and Mokka. At the same time, the project would be conceived as an operational base for an efficient global collaboration with Leapmotor.

New Opel SUV together with Leapmotor

According to the company, the new car should be developed in Rüsselsheim, Germany, with development work entrusted to international teams based between Germany and China. The partnership with Leapmotor, in fact, would have as its primary objective a reduction of design and development times to less than two years, accelerating the path towards industrialization. Sales of the new electric C-SUV are expected to start as early as 2028, an ambitious but consistent timeline with the need to quickly scale capacity and volumes in electrification, leveraging the expertise and components already developed within the Leapmotor ecosystem. In this context, the aim is to combine the latest electric platform and battery technology with Opel’s know-how in design, onboard experience, chassis engineering, as well as specific areas such as lighting and seats.

Development in less than two years

The project, moreover, should be integrated into Stellantis’ European production network, with a possible industrialization step at the Zaragoza plant in Spain, where Opel already produces the Corsa and which since 1982 has been a historic reference point for the B-segment icon. The German brand has announced that the parties are currently continuing feasibility studies and pre-development work according to existing agreements and are continuing discussions towards a potential broader industrial cooperation.
