Di Giannantonio: “Today the perfect picture of the season, Aprilia is superior”

Fabio Di Giannantonio finished the Silverstone Sprint in fifth place, at the end of a race that saw a dominant Aprilia and a Ducati in serious trouble in the second half with the soft rear tire. The Italian rider managed at least to grab the top-5 after a great start, confirming the good impressions seen yesterday.

More than that, however, could not really be done, and Di Giannantonio himself points this out, stating that today’s Sprint was the most faithful picture of the championship.

“Usually I am someone who treats the tires well, I always manage to have something extra at the end, but today it was the opposite. By the fourth lap the rear tire was gone, so it was a bit of a survival race,” these are the words of Di Giannantonio to Sky Sport MotoGP. “I made a mistake, because I thought I had a package to stay with them and so I really pushed hard at the start, but I couldn’t afford it and this ruined the rear tire a lot. Alex in this regard was much better than me. It’s a pity, because behind Ogura and Martin the pace was quite comfortable for me. That’s why I also tried to attack Ai, I expected to go faster than that. But from the fourth lap I started to lose the rear on corner entry, it was even hard to stay upright“.

“In my opinion today is the perfect picture of the values on the field. I have been saying since the beginning of the year that the Aprilias are better off than us, they manage to do everything more comfortably; the riders are doing an incredible job, but they have a package that allows them to be more comfortable, especially in tire management. We depend a lot on rear grip, as soon as we use it a bit more the front doesn’t support us that much and so we are a bit on eggshells. I am pushing hard to improve, unfortunately we haven’t succeeded yet“.

The fifth place represents a positive sign for Di Giannantonio ahead of the long race, in relation to the performance of the other Ducatis. Clearly, at Borgo Panigale they will have to come up with something to counter the Aprilias, which with this superiority risk achieving a historic four-peat.
