Over a second between the two Mercedes drivers
George Russell finished the second Free Practice session of the Belgian GP at Spa in eighth position, over a second behind his teammate Andrea Kimi Antonelli who was the fastest.

The English Mercedes driver highlighted that he particularly suffered from the fact that the Brackley team got the basic setup wrong designed at the factory, a setup that turned out to be too light. However, Russell does not seem too worried about the gap separating him from Antonelli.
“We overestimated the grip levels in the first free practice session which meant that our starting setup was not ideal – said Russell – we struggled due to a problematic car balance and, although we managed to gather useful data, it was not the best way to start the weekend.”

“We then worked hard ahead of the second session making changes that improved the situation – added Russell – there is still room to gain time on the lap, especially in qualifying, and we will try to work on it overnight. The race pace was more competitive and this gives us confidence for Saturday and Sunday“.
