The Ferrari 499P arrives at Le Mans as the undisputed queen, with three wins in as many participations. However, the 6 Hours of Spa showed that the competition is now able to challenge the Rossa even on the tracks most favorable to her, thanks both to the work done with updates and to the BoP intervention. The impact that the Balance of Performance will have on straight-line speed will be decisive in France, where the victory in the most important race of the year will also depend on the exploitation of the new Michelin tires.

The challenge on the Hunaudières
One of the keys to success at Le Mans lies in expressing a lot of top speed on the endless stretches of the Hunaudières. As recent history teaches us, clinging to the hope of having more horsepower from the BoP is not enough. To win, it is essential to have excellent aerodynamic efficiency, to be sought also in setup choices, an area in which Ferrari has repeatedly proven to be the benchmark. The 499P is a car designed especially for the French marathon and it is no coincidence that, since its debut, it has strung together three consecutive wins.
For the same reason, the Maranello Scuderia was the big favorite also for the last appointment in Belgium, but the track returned a picture very different from the forecasts. The 499Ps struggled especially on the straight, where Ferrari recorded the highest top speed only thanks to a slipstream. The competition worked with the updates introduced in winter to improve straight-line efficiency, but without the publication of the BoP there remains the doubt of how much this influenced.

The only certainty is that the game at Le Mans will depend a lot on how the Balance of Performance affects straight-line speeds. It will not only be a matter of gaining or losing time on the straight, but of how much one will have to push in the corners to compensate for any delay accumulated on the Hunaudières. Doing so would mean taking greater risks, especially during lapping, as well as demanding more from the tires, another key of this year’s edition.
Tire factor
The new Michelin tires are the biggest novelty of 2026, which everyone is learning to know by running on track. Cadillac, BMW, and Aston Martin have the advantage of having gathered some more information in IMSA races, but no one knows exactly how the new product will behave at Le Mans. “This year, the tire range has changed quite radically, especially regarding the operating window”, explains Ferdinando Cannizzo, Head of Ferrari Endurance and Race Cars. “I believe that both the medium and the soft will be an option. What will probably be different is the way to use them and to set the strategy for Le Mans. It is something we will have to understand as soon as we know exactly what weather conditions we will face and, in particular, how the tires will work on this circuit.”

Michelin has developed a very consistent and low-degradation tire, so much so that one wonders if it is even possible to complete five stints on the same set. Doing so would mean saving time in the pits and on the out-lap to bring the tires up to temperature, which would allow gaining some positions if one did not have the straight-line speed to do so. Much will depend on temperatures, which will influence setup choices and the level of degradation. The reality, however, is that no one knows what to expect. The only opportunity to run at Le Mans is the tests in the days preceding the event, whose duration is still too short to try to do four or more stints. It will therefore have to be discovered in real time during the race, perhaps gambling if there is nothing left to lose.
Tight fight
Never like this year has trying to make a prediction been a difficult task. At Spa, the pace of all cars was extremely close, a scenario that could be repeated at Le Mans, forecasting a race to be played mainly on reliability and execution. Strategy will be as important as staying out of trouble, since in France the Hypercars will also have to navigate among the LMP2s, in addition to the usual GT3s. It will be up to the drivers not to make mistakes, while it will be up to the teams to deliver a car that conveys the necessary confidence to slip into spaces, feeling in control of the situation. It will be 24 hours in which fate, human talent, and the technical part will intertwine, giving that unique spectacle that has been renewed for over a century at Le Mans.
