Porsche “leaves” the Volkswagen Group and chooses XPENG regarding emissions. Instead of combining its European emissions with those of the German giant for the 2026-2027 biennium, the Stuttgart-based company will actually merge its data with that of the Chinese rival. This was reported by Carscoops citing a new report brought up by analyst Matthias Schmidt. This is a move that puts the VW Group in a more favorable position to achieve its goals and avoid hefty fines: excluding Porsche from the group average, the average value tends to fall back within the desired range.

Porsche chooses XPENG
Some numbers. Last year, the average European emissions of the VW Group, including Porsche, stood at 100 g/km, exceeding the EU limit of 93.6 g/km. Failure to meet these targets could result in penalties for the group of up to 1.5 billion euros in the biennium ending next year. Currently, the penalty is 95 euros per gram of excess CO2 per vehicle over the limit. It is not known how much Porsche is paying XPENG for sharing emissions, but it is clear that it considered the cost preferable to the risk of pushing the VW Group beyond the limit and incurring a fine.
Electric sales declining
Clearly, the trend of Porsche’s electric range does not favor emissions. Not only have European sales of the German brand’s electric models declined, mainly due to lower demand for the Taycan and the fully electric Macan. But the brand has also returned to focusing on internal combustion engine models. This is why Porsche decided to leave the VW emissions consortium to collaborate with XPENG, which sold about 19,000 electric vehicles across Europe in the first six months of this year, with an increase of 126%.
