Volvo, the evolution of design is the key to the future

The Volvo Studio Milan confirms itself, even in the context of Milan Design Week 2026, as a reference point for the dissemination of ideas and content related to car culture. And, more generally, to design culture. This framework includes the special session dedicated to the evolution of Volvo design, focused on the theme “The tension between timeless and futuristic”. An event that transformed the study of design into an opportunity for dialogue on how stylistic continuity is built. While the sector accelerates towards new technologies and new languages.

For Volvo, design is everything

The protagonists of the meeting were Volvo Cars designers Cecilia Stark, Senior Design Manager Strategy, and Rekha Meena, Head of CMF Design (Color, Materials, Finish). Together they guided guests in a reflection on the meaning of timelessness in an era marked by electrification and digitalization. According to the shared approach, design is called upon to be at once progressive, capable of communicating the innovations that the car brings, and faithful to the brand’s timeless values. From this arises a true dichotomy, a design tension that pushes designers to seek a concrete balance between the need to look forward and the necessity to remain authentic.

A constantly evolving sector

During the session, Cecilia Stark and Rekha Meena explored the sources of inspiration for the Volvo language. They did so through tangible examples related to the most recent models, with particular reference to the EX60. Special attention was dedicated to the role of Color, Materials, and Finishes (CMF) in defining the emotional and sensory experience of the car, including references to Scandinavian design, inspiration from nature, and a strongly interdisciplinary approach that also involves fashion, furniture, and product design. Consistent with this vision, sustainability was described as an integral part of the style. A work that considers circular economy, reduction of environmental impact, and innovation in materials, even conceiving each interior as a “room.” A significant step forward for the Swedish brand.
