Volvo, fluctuating sales. But electric cars make a difference

Volvo reported global sales of 178.980 units in the quarter between March and May 2026, recording a 5.5% decrease compared to the same period last year. Despite a contracting environment, the Swedish company highlights a positive element: the results show an improvement compared to the previous quarter (from February to April 2026), thus signaling the possibility of stabilization after a more complex period for demand and volumes.

Volvo Sales Down

In the quarter in question, electrification continued to weigh significantly on the total sales mix. Fully electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles accounted for 48% of total deliveries: BEVs accounted for 23%, while PHEVs reached 25%. A figure that confirms the Swedish manufacturer’s strategy towards a portfolio increasingly oriented towards low-emission powertrains, although demand dynamics remain uneven across markets.

But electrification is not slowing down

At a scenario level, the automotive sector, including the high-end segment, continues to face difficulties in all geographical areas, as highlighted by the results for the quarter ending May 2026. In China, pressure remains high: overall sector volumes have been declining by double digits for months, attributable to very intense competitiveness and an unfavorable macroeconomic framework. In the United States, however, the first signs of recovery are emerging: both the market and Volvo show a gradual improvement in deliveries, although the trend remains conditioned by lower consumer confidence and a slowdown in demand for fully electric and plug-in hybrid cars after the withdrawal of incentives.
