Who knows when the new Toyota Highlander EV will see the light of day. The electric version of the Japanese SUV was presented in February this year, and its production was supposed to start in autumn. In this case, the conditional is mandatory, also because in July Toyota itself announced a delay of at least eight weeks for “final adjustments.” And it doesn’t end there, because just these days Nikkei Asia rumors claim that the start of assembly has been further postponed by several months.
Toyota Highlander EV remains uncertain
Perhaps even by a year, pushing the electric SUV’s market launch to 2027 or beyond. That’s right: the Highlander EV, which will be produced in Georgetown, Kentucky, should enter the production line no earlier than January 2027. It seems that Toyota has already informed its supplier network of the new schedule. As mentioned, a representative of the company’s North American division clarified that the additional time is intended for final checks. As well as for quality validation before starting mass production.
“New quality checks” are needed
Meanwhile, the Japanese company has insisted that the delay has nothing to do with the demand for electric vehicles in the USA. It also emphasized that its EV sales are still growing. The numbers confirm it, at least in part, since electric vehicle sales in the USA fell by 21% year-on-year in the second quarter, while Toyota’s EV deliveries more than tripled in the same period. Remember that the Highlander EV shares the platform with the Subaru Getaway, and that both three-row electric vehicles will be produced on the same Georgetown line.
