Tesla has announced test rides in limited areas of Austin, Texas, aboard its Cybercab, a two-seater vehicle designed to be without a steering wheel or pedals. The initiative, according to reports, has been met with attention from both enthusiasts and investors. The U.S. automotive safety agency, NHTSA, has stated that it is evaluating Tesla’s proposal. The choice to limit tests to specific zones and to include them within a regulatory framework appears central to reducing risks and verifying the system’s reliability in the field.

Tesla Cybercab, progress in the USA
CEO Elon Musk has linked the Cybercab to the strategy of transforming Tesla into a driving force in the autonomous vehicle sector. In the previous weeks, the company promoted a purported Cybercab launch event in Austin. According to collected testimonies and released videos, the event attracted a significant influx of participants, some of whom came to Texas to try the golden cars with butterfly-opening doors. According to Reuters reports, Musk even reportedly skipped the meeting and discussions on topics such as tariffs, production, and technology were concentrated in a short time, about fifteen minutes.
Autonomous driving in the spotlight
Looking ahead, Tesla continues to focus on a robotaxi network already based on a limited service with a fleet of Model Y equipped with autonomous driving, some with an operator on board for safety reasons. However, the fleet registered in Texas would be less than half that of competitor Waymo, whose system uses driverless vehicles but with human controls managed by the project. For the Cybercab project, federal regulations remain crucial, which normally require the presence of a human operator. For this reason, the NHTSA has also shown specific interest in Tesla’s initiative.
