Skoda has stated that the restructuring plan of the parent company Volkswagen, which includes cuts to production capacity and the model range, will not have any direct impact on its activities. This was reported by the car manufacturer from Mlada Boleslav itself, which confirmed that its operations will continue without interruptions. In fact, Skoda would therefore have no immediate changes in its operations or in the already ongoing production plans.
Volkswagen crisis: no immediate impact for Skoda
Volkswagen announced last Thursday its intention to drastically reduce its model range and further decrease production capacity, as part of a broad reorganization. Some sources cited by Reuters indicate that the move could result in the loss of about 100,000 jobs, a circumstance that has prompted unions to mobilize to contest and block the plan. In this context, Skoda’s stance aims to reassure that, at least in the short term, the scenario does not directly affect its production.
Impact on employment and economy
However, Skoda remains one of the main employers in the Czech Republic, with over 34,000 employees, and is at the center of an industrial system that significantly depends also on exports to Western European markets. For this reason, even if the company claims the absence of immediate effects, any changes in the strategy and industrial choices of the VW group could still, in the medium term, have repercussions on employment and the national economy. And it would not be a surprise, given the strong interconnection of the Czech automotive sector with the dynamics of the German giant.
