Toyota is preparing to revive the MR2. It’s no secret: we have long known that the new sports car will feature a 2-liter four-cylinder turbo G20E engine, will have a mid-engine layout, will be part of Toyota’s racing program, potentially boast all-wheel drive, and its design could be influenced by the FT-Se concept. What has never been revealed is the debut date of the new model. The uncertainty remains, although for the first time Autocar hints at a possible presentation year: 2028.

The new MR2 will be reborn within two years
We will see if the rumors are confirmed. Rumors also concern another important element: the new MR2 might not carry the Toyota badge. Not officially or at least without the logo. The sports car could indeed follow in the footsteps of the new GR GT, with Gazoo Racing evolving into an independent performance brand. Just as Lexus is Toyota’s luxury brand. What we do know is that the Japanese manufacturer has recently moved from component testing of the MR2 on mid-engine GR Yaris prototypes to testing a real prototype of the new model.

But the heavy camouflage has made it difficult to get a clear idea of the final exterior design, although everything suggests that the influence of the FT-Se concept presented in 2023 will be strong. As for performance, Carscoops predicts that the compact G20E engine will deliver around 400 to 450 hp in the standard version, while the racing versions could exceed 600 hp. The fact remains that, to date, the Japanese manufacturer has not yet confirmed the final transmission details, prices, or even the production name.
