According to the Unifor union, contract negotiations with Stellantis have reached a deadlock. Although a preliminary agreement was targeted by last September 11, the deal was not reached. Negotiations have therefore been suspended to allow the main negotiating committee to evaluate the next steps. At the heart of the issue, the union itself claims, is mainly the uncertainty surrounding the future of a key Canadian plant. With direct repercussions on workers and local industrial setups.

Stellantis and the future of the Brampton plant
The main cause of the interruption would indeed be the fate of the Brampton assembly plant. Production was initially supposed to involve the redesigned version of the Jeep Compass. But Stellantis would have decided to move production to the USA, also linked to the context of the trade war with Canada. After implying that production in Brampton could continue, in August the company reportedly changed course, announcing that it was seriously considering closing and selling the plant to third parties. Unifor strongly opposed this possibility, denouncing that the group would have nevertheless signed a memorandum of understanding with Roshel, a company tasked with taking over or reconfiguring the industrial scenario.
Unions in concern
According to Unifor, the operation risks jeopardizing wages, pensions, and other benefits of its members, constituting a devastating blow to the Canadian industry. The union argues that there will be no preliminary agreement without an adequate solution for the members of the local section 1285 of Brampton. On the other hand, Stellantis told CBC News that Roshel represents an opportunity to maintain sustainable operations and preserve the strategic role of the site, citing the intention to create over 2,000 jobs. The tension would not only concern Brampton: Unifor also reported the lack of confirmations on plans for the Windsor plant and the Etobicoke foundry, respectively linked to the production of models such as Chrysler Pacifica and Dodge Charger, and to aluminum die-casting for various vehicles.
