The shutdown of non-approved speed cameras is done. After the announced reform of recent days, the Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport has deactivated the devices throughout the national territory, region by region, fully implementing a measure awaited for 34 years. The new rules uniformly define the discipline of characteristics, requirements, and procedures for approval, calibration, and verification of systems used to detect speed limit violations. The goal is to guarantee certain and equal rules for everyone.

The Mit deactivates non-approved speed cameras
In practice, the intervention involves a cutoff for devices that are not suitable according to the established parameters. 850 speed cameras, the Mit indicates, will have to obtain new approval to become operational again. At the same time, 3,150 devices remain in operation because they already meet the required standards. Among the turned-off meters are 12 devices in Abruzzo, 18 in the province of Bolzano, 7 in Campania, 15 in Marche, 4 in Aosta Valley, and one in Basilicata. Significant numbers also in Lombardy (144), Piedmont (131), Emilia-Romagna (94), Veneto (84), Tuscany (69), and Friuli-Venezia Giulia (47), as well as 18 in Molise, 6 in Sardinia, 16 in Liguria, 3 in Umbria, 9 in the province of Trento, and 4 in Calabria.

The main reason for the measure is also legal-administrative. The rules enacted aim to strengthen the solidity of the assessments and the validity of sanctions, after heated litigation. Several rulings have in fact highlighted the difference between simple technical approval and true approval, opening the way to thousands of appeals against entities that would have used approved but not homologated devices. Meanwhile, a data point on the trend also emerges: last year fines detected through speed cameras decreased by 8.9% compared to 2024, with a total revenue for municipalities of 56.5 million. At the top of the ranking is Florence with 19.7 million, followed by Bologna (9.2), Milan (6.9), Genoa (4.8), and Palermo (4.2).
