Sainz’s folly: spun Piastri instead of respecting blue flags while battling Alonso

The Williams driver facilitated Norris’s pit stop overtake

Oscar Piastri took advantage of a Lando Norris error in Turn 2 on the first lap to take the lead from his McLaren teammate.

The British driver always had a superior pace compared to the Australian, and during the second pit stop, Norris asked to stay out to attempt an overcut or at least to have much fresher tires in the third and final stint.

Carlos Sainz made Lando Norris’s task easier. The Williams driver was battling Fernando Alonso between Turn 2 and Turn 3, and instead of respecting the blue flags, he ended up bumping Oscar Piastri, who risked going off track.

Piastri lost two seconds due to this incident and suffered an overcut in the pits from Lando Norris, who stopped immediately after what happened between Sainz and Piastri.
