SAIC, first factory for electric cars in Europe

The Chinese automotive group SAIC, owner of the MG brand, has announced the establishment in Galicia, in the northwest of Spain, of its first European industrial and logistics hub dedicated to the production of electric vehicles. The initiative aims to consolidate the presence of Chinese manufacturers in the European automotive market, entering a phase in which industrial competition is also growing along the supply chain of components and logistics. The project, according to the Galician regional government, involves a total investment of 200 million euros and is structured in several strategic interventions in the territory.

The plant will be located in two key points: a factory in the outer port area of Ferrol and an industrial center in As Pontes. The production capacity indicated by SAIC is 200,000 cars per year, with an estimated employment impact of about 2,300 jobs in the initial phase, of which 1,000 are direct jobs linked directly to the factory and port. Work is expected to start in 2027, while the goal is to start production by the end of 2028, with a realization path defined as “long and complex” by the regional institutions.

The Galician government, led by Alfonso Rueda of the Partido Popular, emphasized the involvement and collaboration of the central government chaired by Sánchez, calling it exemplary, hoping it continues throughout the entire process. The project aims to develop a new European automotive hub in the Ferrol area, inspired by the manufacturing hub model of the Stellantis Group in Vigo. The strategy also relies on a regional supply chain that includes about 80 companies in the sector and foresees SAIC’s commitment to ensure that a very significant part of the supplies comes from the EU, thus strengthening local industrial integration into the continental electric vehicle system.
