Sunday’s race in Montreal was a very bitter Canadian GP for George Russell. The English Mercedes driver, who secured Sprint pole, won the short race and took pole position on Saturday, missed out on the clean sweep due to a technical problem that ‘shut down’ his W17 while he was leading the race and fully battling for the final victory with teammate Kimi Antonelli. After the usual post-race interviews, where he showed all his understandable bitterness, Russell shared a further ‘cool-headed’ reflection on what happened during the race on social media.

“I am lost for words having had to retire while leading – Russell wrote in a post on his official profile – I really enjoyed the duel with Kimi and wished I could have done 40 more laps like that! Otherwise, I am proud of my weekend in Canada: pole position in the sprint, sprint race win, pole yesterday and leading the race today. Looking forward to the next race“, commented the Englishman.

Today, again via social media, Russell also wanted to publicly apologize to the marshals at the Canadian circuit for having thrown away the headrest after retiring. A gesture that cost him a 5000 Euro fine, which for now remains suspended. “I apologize to the marshals and the FIA for making their job harder than necessary – wrote the #63 Englishman – at that moment I was overwhelmed by emotions”.
