The animosity between the Englishman from Mercedes and the Milton Keynes team dates back to the end of the 2024 season, when Russell clashed hard with Verstappen following an alleged impeding committed by the Dutchman against the Mercedes driver during qualifying for that year’s Qatar GP. Verstappen received a penalty he considered unfair for that incident and had a heated argument with the Brit in front of the stewards. The following weekend, in front of journalists, Russell harshly accused the orange champion saying that “when something doesn’t go his way he lets out unjustified anger and borderline violence“.

Words that Red Bull sent back to the sender, via social media, precisely on Sunday after Russell’s retirement, which came while he was leading the Canadian race due to a technical problem with his W17. The Englishman from Mercedes, furious about the unexpected stop, threw away the headrest in anger after parking his car, making it fly onto the track and receiving a (suspended) 5000 Euro fine from the FIA for this; if he does it again, he will have to pay that amount to the federation. Red Bull’s social team, under a post published by a user who mocked Russell’s anger, picked up exactly those words commenting with a sharp “borderline something“.
