Road safety remains one of the most neglected challenges globally in public health and development. This was reiterated in Nairobi by the United Nations Special Envoy for Road Safety and former Ferrari CEO Jean Todt. He also emphasized the urgency to reduce accidents and their consequences which mainly affect the most vulnerable communities. According to the high-level briefing in Kenya, the problem is cultural and related to user behavior, but also infrastructural: if we look only at the African country, roads are often dangerous due to poor road surface conditions and inadequate nighttime lighting.

The road safety challenge
A situation similar to that of many countries around the world. Todt, together with the United Nations Director-General in Kenya Zainab Bangura, highlighted the gap between commitments made and their actual implementation. To reverse the trend, declaring goals is not enough: more effective coordination within the United Nations system is needed, access to more precise and reliable data, and a series of infrastructures designed and managed with safety criteria. In this context, he stressed the need for real accountability, so as to make plans concrete and turn them into interventions capable of reducing preventable road deaths.
A problem worldwide
“The journey should end safely“, Todt emphasized, pointing to the direction of structural change. The challenge, he explained, is to transform roads from “places of risk” into paths of opportunity, mobility, and life. This requires political will, stricter controls, safer infrastructures, and consistent actions at all levels. In short, in his view, only with collective commitment and smarter policies can progress be built that truly protects people and safeguards the future.
