No conversion to F1 on two wheels
The sporting director of MotoGP, Carlos Ezpeleta, was the protagonist – during the MotoGP weekend at Mugello – of a long chat granted to the main Italian media, including FormulaPassion.it. Among the points touched on by the Spanish manager was inevitably the future of the category and the MotoGP World Championship in general. The takeover by Liberty Media made more than a few people – inside and outside the paddock – fear the risk of a ‘formulaunization‘ of MotoGP.

However, Ezpeleta ruled out this risk, emphasizing how MotoGP wants to expand its fanbase while avoiding alienating the historic audience and – above all – has no intention of changing the way racing is done, considering it already the best of all. “This is the only way – Ezpeleta stated – it is very clear to us. When we make these decisions we never want to make a choice. For us the issue is only to think about how to bring these things that have already attracted so many fans worldwide to new spectators. We do not think we have to choose between today’s fans and tomorrow’s fans, because in our opinion the things we want to do will be good for both“.

The best motorsport
“I think it is hard to believe that this is not the best type of motorsport in the world. We are proud of what we have built so far together with the teams, the manufacturers and the riders. There is no desire to change but to improve the surroundings”, Ezpeleta then claimed. And he envies nothing from the ‘cousin’ F1, except one thing: “The only thing we clearly can never have like F1 is the safety aspect – Ezpeleta acknowledged – that allows them to do things that unfortunately we could never do, because it is a different sport. The money? I think we will get there – he then added with some confidence – and in my opinion there are many things that F1 would take from us, otherwise they wouldn’t need 40-meter wide tracks…our sport is incomparable to all other motorsports and I would not change anything about the sport, except the safety issue”.
