In addition to the Clio, Renault aims to also renew the iconic R5. On this model, the CEO of the Diamond, Fabrice Cambolive, was clear: “I don’t know if we will reinvent the R5 in five years, but we will try to offer something revolutionary in terms of the car’s appeal”. Translated: Renault is going through a phase where it tries to understand the winning formula of the car, because it is not obvious to say that its success “is due to this, this and that.”

Renault 5 is about to change its skin
According to Autocar, the Diamond will soon introduce an important update with more powerful engines and a larger battery for the R5. As part of this development program, Cambolive himself stated that the development team identified some weaknesses of the car. Then he observed: “The positive aspect is that we identified them before people pointed them out to us. And this shows that they were able to think about the car without compromises.” According to him, the important thing is not so much to try to compensate for all the car’s weaknesses, but to offer something of added value.
No compromises
“It could be another type of bodywork, or something based on a different driving pleasure, or a collaboration with another brand, like Mini is doing with Paul Smith. I don’t know yet“, he admitted. Then he concluded: “It’s hard to say precisely what the key factors of the R5’s success are, but I would say the main one was not to compromise. In fact, we did not listen to those, both internally and externally, who told us that we should equip the model with a hybrid system because ‘if you want to succeed you need to have a combustion engine’. But we didn’t do it, because we don’t try to fix the weaknesses. We focus on driving pleasure and added value throughout the entire life cycle.”
