Mekies makes a move
“I would like some engineers to stay” said Max Verstappen in a press conference before the Belgian GP. Indeed, the ‘diaspora’ from Red Bull is becoming increasingly worrying. After many departures, however, there is also a significant incoming movement.
As anticipated by the BBC and confirmed by The-Race.com, Laurent Mekies has managed to bring Gwen Lagrue, a Mercedes man for the last 10 years, to Milton Keynes. During this period, Lagrue has primarily been Andrea Kimi Antonelli’s guardian angel along the path that led the young Italian driver from karting to the top of the F1 Drivers’ World Championship.
Gwen Lagrue will essentially be the heir to Helmut Marko, filling a significant ‘gap’. It has not yet been defined when Lagrue will actually be operational because Mercedes and Red Bull are negotiating the gardening leave period.

Christian Horner shopped at Mercedes to set up the engine program, starting with project manager Ben Hodgkinson. Red Bull’s latest acquisitions from Mercedes have been nothing short of spot-on, considering the performance of the Red Bull power unit; we’ll see if Lagrue follows this trend.
