Future decided halfway
Another piece of the 2027 MotoGP grid is completed – but only partially. Honda has in fact officially announced the signing with a multi-year contract of David Alonso. The Madrid-born 2006 rider, who races under the Venezuelan flag, will be able to ride a bike from the Japanese manufacturer in the premier class. Alonso, 2024 Moto3 world champion and currently fourth in the Moto2 World Championship standings, is however not yet certain of the team he will race for next year.

In the statement released by Honda it is only mentioned that Alonso will be a MotoGP rider for the Tokyo-based manufacturer but it is not specified whether his seat will be the factory team one, alongside Fabio Quartararo, or the LCR team one. The choice is between him and the Brazilian Diogo Moreira: one of the two will race with the official team while the other will have to ‘settle’ for the customer team.

Honda’s statement
“Honda Racing Corporation (HRC) is pleased to confirm the signing of a multi-year contract with David Alonso for the MotoGP World Championship – reads the official Honda statement –
the twenty-year-old Colombian has achieved one of the most impressive careers in recent times in the lightweight classes, finishing third in his Moto3 debut in 2023 before dominating the category the following year. Currently in his second season in the Moto2 World Championship, Alonso secured his first victory in the intermediate class at the 2025 Hungarian Grand Prix and currently holds fourth place in the overall standings for the 2026 season. With a total of 20 wins, 30 podiums, and nine pole positions between Moto3 and Moto2, Alonso has continued to exceed expectations. He will make his debut on the 2027 Honda during the post-race tests in Valencia“.
