Red Bull tries again: in Hungary the Macarena wing will arrive 'encore'

The wing that wasn’t there

In Belgium, Red Bull secured a nice podium with Max Verstappen, who finished the race in third position, and also shone with Isack Hadjar, sixth at the finish after starting from the 21st grid spot. A double significant result considering also that the Milton Keynes team gave up using their ‘Macarena’ rear wing at Spa, which resembled Ferrari’s, for safety reasons. After the incidents involving Max Verstappen in qualifying at Spielberg and in the race at Silverstone, the team chose not to take risks.

Verstappen himself, at the start of the Belgian weekend, when asked about this choice, had described the reasons that led the team to step back as “quite obvious”. Hadjar in turn had judged the absence of the particular mobile rear wing on the RB22 as a step back, which certainly would have been very useful on the long straights of the spectacular track located in the Ardennes.

Solution on the way

The good news for Red Bull is that the ‘Macarena’ wing model should return to the car in Hungary. The confirmation came from team principal Laurent Mekies during his traditional post-GP press conference at Spa.

The French manager did not go into too much detail but confirmed the nature of the problems experienced in Austria and England and above all guaranteed that corrections have been made: “Mechanical problem or two different problems? Both are true – Mekies explained to journalists – it was a mechanical problem, but two different things. So two distinct mechanical problems. But we will have a solution for Budapest,” he concluded. The hope, of course, is that the device has been made ‘safe’ to avoid other dangerous crashes like those suffered by Verstappen.
