New all-Japanese agreement between Nissan and Honda. The two companies have indeed announced that they have signed a joint development agreement, with the aim of standardizing a series of electronic control units that form the heart of next-generation SDVs. Both Nissan and Honda attribute to the so-called ECU the same importance as the onboard operating system, the key middleware components, and the control software.

Nissan and Honda, joint development agreement
Through an official statement, Nissan reported that the electrical and electronic architecture integrating the electronic control units and software, developed jointly, is intended to be applied to the next-generation SDVs of both companies starting from fiscal year 2029. “As part of their strategic partnership, Nissan and Honda continue to explore collaboration opportunities in various areas, to accelerate the path towards carbon neutrality and contribute to creating a future without road fatalities involving Nissan and Honda vehicles”, it reads.
Next-generation software vehicles
As initially mentioned, both companies aim to standardize these core technologies, leveraging their engineering expertise and combined development resources. With a threefold target: improving efficiency, accelerating innovation, and strengthening competitiveness through reduced development costs and greater economies of scale. “Looking ahead, Nissan and Honda will continue to leverage their respective strengths, explore opportunities for added value, and deepen collaboration to offer tangible benefits to customers and society”, the statement concludes.
