In Australia the first street circuit for MotoGP
That MotoGP had been planning the ‘landing’ on street circuits for some time was known for months, but that the ‘Trojan horse’ of this scenario was the disappearance from the calendar of the legendary Phillip Island is certainly not an easy pill to swallow for all motorcycling fans. The World Championship will bid farewell to the wonderful track inaugurated in 1956 to arrive in Adelaide, home of the F1 Australian GP from 1985 to 1995 before the Circus moved to Melbourne.

The Adelaide circuit will obviously be partially redesigned given that the Mistral Hairpin will no longer be the last corner, but the first since all the pits and the paddock will necessarily have to be revised. In any case, the bikes are expected to travel along the ‘Brabham straight’ section before braking for the Dequetteville hairpin where speeds close to 340 km/h essentially between the walls as happens in Macau or the Isle of Man.
Jack Miller, the Australian rider present at the project’s press conference, took on the role of ambassador for this project, emphasizing that he has no particular fears regarding safety: “I know how Australians behave when they build things like this – Miller said – they are very attentive to safety aspects and construction quality, there’s no need to worry. There are already many other circuits on the calendar with walls closer than those in Adelaide in terms of speed and runoff area.”

“Obviously I am devastated that Phillip Island has been removed from the calendar – he added – I’ve been racing bikes for 15 years and it’s probably the best circuit I’ve ever raced on. On the other hand, however, I am excited that Australia had the courage to step forward and become the first in the world to have a street circuit. Street circuits are never the most spectacular. No one ever goes to a street circuit and says ‘wow, what a show’, look for example at what happens in F1 with Monaco, it is both loved and hated. There are many magnificent circuits in MotoGP and therefore it will be nice to have a particular one like Adelaide“.
