Mercedes‑Benz’s electrification strategy is not just about sedans and SUVs. The German manufacturer has in fact extended its vision to the van segment, where the new electric VLE stands as an example of integration between limousine-level comfort and the versatility typical of minivans. Presented in Stuttgart, the VLE was born on the Star’s new modular and flexible VAN architecture, designed to offer different solutions while maintaining high standards of efficiency, space, and technology.
The new Mercedes VLE
The design approach favors a platform that lends itself to varied configurations, allowing Mercedes to offer a vehicle capable of meeting private, business, and collective mobility needs without sacrificing the performance and comfort typical of the Star. At the heart of the new VLE is 800-volt technology and high-performance charging capability. The battery with 115 kWh of usable energy capacity allows for a range of over 700 km in the WLTP cycle. This combination of energy density and charging infrastructure makes the van suitable for long journeys and intensive use, reducing downtime. In this sense, Mercedes claims the possibility of recharging up to 355 km of range in just 15 minutes.
Up to 305 kW
The performance component is not lacking: the electric system delivers up to 305 kW and is combined with 4MATIC all-wheel drive. These values translated onto the road mean a decisive sprint and a brilliant response, but the VLE is not just pure power. Mercedes has taken care of the driving dynamics with solutions designed to make the van maneuverable even in urban and tight contexts: the AIRMATIC air suspension with 40 mm of height adjustment and a rear axle steering up to 7 degrees in fact allow a turning radius between curbs of just 10,9 meters. The low and sleek silhouette then contributes to significant aerodynamic performance, with a drag coefficient of 0,25, benefiting both efficiency and quietness at sustained speeds.
Seats for all tastes
The cabin is designed to combine modularity and comfort. The VLE in fact offers configurations for up to eight seats with extremely flexible seating. The seats can be mounted in a manual version, equipped with four integrated wheels to move them easily, or in an electric version, adjustable via app or from the onboard interface. Regardless of the mode chosen, the house of the Star focuses on comfort with the electric Grand Comfort Seat, which offers an additional cushion, wireless charging, lumbar support, massage function, and calf support.
Technology and infotainment
Onboard technology elevates the travel experience: MB.OS coordinates systems and connectivity, while the MBUX Rear Space Experience transforms the rear seats into a true multimedia space thanks to a 31,3″ retractable panoramic screen hidden in the roof lining with split‑screen, 8K resolution, and an integrated 8 MP camera. The Sky View glass roof, enhanced by ambient lighting, contributes to creating a bright and scenic environment. The display equipment includes a 10.25″ driver dashboard and 14″ central and front passenger screens.
On the market in autumn
Safety and driving assistance are also central. As standard, the VLE is equipped with Distance Assist DISTRONIC, while the MB.DRIVE ASSIST package is available on request, adding semi‑autonomous steering on the highway and the new Lane Change Assist. For the commercial launch, Mercedes starts with the VLE 300 electric, later reinforcing the range with the VLE 400 4MATIC electric which, with its 305 kW, is proposed as a high-performance version. The model is expected on the market in autumn, with prices yet to be announced.
