Herbert without mercy
An F1 that does not test the drivers, where talent is not about pushing a racing car to the limit but pressing buttons at the right time: faced with what took place in Melbourne, a purist like Johnny Herbert who drove in F1 from 1989 to 2000 had no mercy in demolishing what should be the ultimate expression of motor racing.
“As a former driver and now a fan, I don’t want to think about clipping, boost, overtaking modes and active wings – said Herbert when reached by Snabbare – I just want to see the drivers tested, but they are not being tested in the right way. They are being tested like in a video game. Is this the spirit of F1? Buttons to press at the right time? Where has the skill gone? Anyone can do it, even my grandmother could take Eau Rouge with these cars“.

“Real Formula 1 cars are gone now – Herbert added – the ability of a Max, of a Lewis, of a Senna, of a Prost, of a Schumacher, to always be able to push beyond the limits, to control the speed of the car in those very high-speed corners like the ones we have in Melbourne, was what really tested the driver.
