Mercedes-Benz is reportedly considering entering the defense sector. This was indicated by CEO Ola Kallenius to the Wall Street Journal, linking the possible shift to the increase in geopolitical uncertainty and the need for Europe to strengthen its defense profile. The CEO of the Star company emphasized the company’s willingness to contribute positively to the goal, even though military activity would remain marginal compared to the core business, which continues to revolve around passenger cars and light commercial vehicles.

Mercedes considers entering the defense sector
According to reports, Mercedes’ industrial logic would be to leverage already consolidated capabilities in high-volume production. Defense-related activities would therefore represent “a smaller share” of total revenue but could be configured as a growing niche capable of also impacting economic results. In this perspective, Kallenius suggested that the company’s strengths could be useful for operating more directly in military armament supply chains, turning a potentially experimental interest into a structured segment, while maintaining limited size.
Niche military activity
The assessment comes in a context of pressure on profits typical of the Western industry. Mercedes is reportedly going through economic difficulties, with reduced profits following losses also linked to increased tariffs and tensions related to competition in the Chinese market. Furthermore, the company would not be starting from scratch: since 2021 it has spun off the truck division and remains its largest shareholder, while it has long offered military variants of the G-Class. At the same time, other European and American groups also seem to be moving in the same direction: Volkswagen and Israeli companies for components connected to systems like Iron Dome, Rheinmetall with agreements for production expansion and initiatives against drones with technology partners, up to talks in the USA between defense officials and car manufacturers to leverage personnel and production capacities in ammunition manufacturing.
