Red Bull dances again with the Macarena
Already in the Silverstone test, the Red Bull had caught the attention of technical observers for the use of a rotating rear wing, which immediately evoked the one first tested by Ferrari already in the winter tests in Barcelona.
And in Miami both Ferrari and Red Bull showed up with the ‘Macarena’ wing, although functioning a bit differently in rotation, but with the same final goal: to reduce drag and gain a few km/h on the straights.
The second place in qualifying of Max Verstappen’s RB22 was a clear sign of discontinuity compared to the three races and reassured Red Bull about the soundness of the path taken.

But the Red Bull ‘Macarena’ is not a copy of Ferrari’s
Laurent Mekies wanted to defend Red Bull’s work, emphasizing to Sky Deutschland that his team certainly did not copy Ferrari: “What I can say for sure is that our guys designed the wing without ever having seen Ferrari’s before. So you can’t say who thought of it first. We invented it ourselves, independently of what others have done. We had this idea already at the end of last year and that’s when we started working on it.”

Overall on the updates Mekies explained: “The team did a fantastic job. After Japan we knew we had a lot of work to do to understand the problems we were encountering. We completely renewed the car. We don’t think we have solved everything but we are going in the right direction.”
