McLaren McL 6GT, authentic manual after over 30 years

“Celebrate the purity of design and the connection with the driver”. This is how McLaren described the new McL 6GT, which made its debut at the Monterey Car Week 2026. The Woking-based company labels it as a contemporary interpretation of the M6GT, the progenitor of the British brand’s road cars. It enjoys a DNA of pure lightness, thanks to the presence of a monocoque and a body entirely made of carbon fiber.

The new McLaren McL 6GT

For now, it is a concept car, but McLaren has already assured that series production will happen: the production model is coming in 2028, and it creates space for a new type of exclusive McLaren supercar, beyond the main range. The true strength of this new sports car is not only the power of a V8 engine, but also, for the first time in a brand car since the legendary McLaren F1 of 1992, a genuine manual gearbox that transmits power to the rear wheels. “Every gear change, every accelerator movement, and every steering input are designed to be intentional, physical, and rewarding, connecting the driver to the machine”, McLaren says.

The mechanical character extends beyond the transmission. The company cites other elements such as hydraulic steering, tactile controls, and a series of visible engineering details that contribute to creating a sense of pure involvement for the driver. Added to these are machined and knurled aluminum controls, along with meticulous ergonomics that reinforce the same human-machine connection, with details inspired by the M6GT. The design of the gear lever has been carefully studied to maximize sensitivity and travel, but also incorporates design elements inspired by the brand’s tradition.

Tribute to Bruce McLaren’s vision

McLaren, through the Special Operations division (MSO), paid tribute to Bruce McLaren’s vision for the M6GT of the time, presenting a unique, meticulously assembled example at this year’s Goodwood Festival of Speed. The new McL 6GT takes this celebration of McLaren’s road origins to a higher level. The name McL 6GT is inspired by the brand’s presence on the track, as well as the foundations of the company’s automotive journey. And it creates a direct link between these two areas, honoring the vision Bruce McLaren had for the team he founded and the spirit that continues to define the brand today.
